Brighton Synagogue - EH Smith

Brighton Synagogue

Brighton

This innovative art installation was made of 6000 sapphire terracotta pieces custom-made by our partners at S.Anselmo which create a wonderful see-through breeze block effect for the new synagogue which is the central feature of the new Brighton and Hove Jewish Community (BNJC).

4D Studio Architects designed the screen which consists of extruded clay tubes stacked in a hexagonal pattern. Hexagonal tiling is a means of stacking circular tubes in three dimensions that allows the greatest transparency for passage of daylight to the inside of the synagogue. The hexagonal honeycomb pattern also creates a distinctive geometric feature: the white mortar around each tube forms a subtle ‘Star of David’ pattern when viewed internally.
