A project in which EH Smith’s specialist brick advisory team was involved has won a prestigious honour at the 2013 Brick Awards in London.
The ORTUS, Maudsley Learning Centre’s new home in Camberwell, London – which was designed by Duggan Morris Architects – was honoured with both Best Public Building and The Supreme Award, at the recent awards organised by the Brick Development Association.
The Maudsley Learning Centre is a charity promoting awareness of mental health issues. The brief from the architect was: “the brickwork itself should respond directly to the building’s Georgian context and embody the craft and skill of local brick tradition, whilst the interior required rich colours and textural qualities to create a feeling of warmth and invitation for the context of mental well-being.”
Duggan Morris turned to EH Smith’s Clay Products specialist team, who advise them on how to blend different brick colours to get the effect they were looking for. They also recommended ways of ensuring they could achieve the bespoke finish for The ORTUS project within budget.
