WordSmiths by EH Smith Architectural Solutions
WordSmiths is a series of virtual talks hosted by EH Smith Architectural Solutions from our new Showroom on St John Street in Clerkenwell. All our talks take place on Zoom and are completely free to attend. These events are open to all, but will be particularly interesting to Architects, Engineers, Contractors and anyone with an interest in architecture and the care and management of the built environment.
Our first WordSmiths event was with Ronald Rael, the winner of the 2020 Design Museum & Beazley Design of the Year Award.
Rael talks about his pioneering work in the US/Mexico borderlands bringing communities together through experimentation with 3D printing adobe buildings. He covers the context and challenges behind the Teeter-Totter Wall ( a series of bright pink seesaws that cross the Mexico-USA border ), the nature of borders and boundaries themselves, and the role of the architect and designers in understanding and challenging notions of boundaries, particularly in a post-pandemic world.
Images of the Teeter-Totter installation went viral in 2019 and are seen by many as a symbol of building bridges beyond borders.
PROFESSOR RONALD RAEL is the Eva Li Memorial Chair in Architecture and Director of the Masters of Architecture program with a joint appointment in the Department of Architecture at the University of Berkeley, California. His research interests connect indigenous and traditional material practices to contemporary technologies. He is a design activist, author, and thought leader within the topics of additive manufacturing, border wall studies, and earthen architecture. In 2014 his creative practice, Rael San Fratello (with architect Virginia San Fratello), was named an Emerging Voice by The Architectural League of New York—one of the most coveted awards in North American architecture. In 2016 Rael San Fratello was also awarded the Digital Practice Award of Excellence by the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA).
