BBC Television Centre - EH Smith

BBC Television Centre

London

Completed in 1960, BBC Television Centre is a culturally iconic building like few others.

Designed by legendary Modernist Architect Graham Dawbarn CBE (known as ‘GRD’) it became instantly recognisable to millions of TV viewers.

Following the consolidation of the BBC into Broadcasting House in central London the site was earmarked for a landmark development.

EH Smith have worked very closely with Architects AHMM, main contractor Mace and specialist subcontractors Lyons & Annoot and Grants Precast to facilitate solutions to many of the technical challenges the brickwork faced on this development.

Our in depth knowledge of the brick options available allowed the Architect and Client to choose a more expensive handmade brick which was used in place of a regular stock brick as it was more suited to the pre-cast construction method. Counter intuitively they were able to save money by using a more expensive product!

The traditionally laid bricks by Lyons & Annoot complement the precast elements from Grants Precast seamlessly.
