This selfbuild project in St Albans unusually used Porotherm as an exposed internal surface.
Although it is not usually left exposed, the warm terracotta tones and tactile quality really stand out!
Testimonial
It was a joy to build with Porotherm. We had seen this material in continental projects and really liked the look of it. Keeping the blocks exposed might not be to everyone’s taste but the natural, pastel, warm colours and textures of the material we felt were just too good to hide away behind a layer of plasterboard. Combined with wooden surfaces, plants and lots of daylight the clay block walls really make the home come to life but it’s also worth noting that keeping the blocks exposed requires a bit more attention to detail to ensure flush walls and avoidance of the thin mortar being visible – this made the installation take a little longer but it was totally worth it! We’ve had lots of compliments from our friends and family.
In addition to the aesthetic qualities of the clayblocks we got excited about the simplicity in regards to the wall buildup that this material enables – in our walls Porotherm makes up the entire wall build-up except from the render on the outside. This simplicity made it feel like building with LEGO – it was very straightforward.
Porotherm’s cellular structure ensures good insulating qualities alongside other great technical qualities such as good fire resistance, high sustainability credentials, humidity reduction and thermal mass. We’ve particularly noticed the impact of the thermal mass of the blocks that has helped maintain comfortable temperatures inside our home year-round – in the winter the internal surface of the blocks feels warm while they are cool in the summer.
Porotherm’s clay blocks offered us incredible functionality and natural beauty – and that’s why we’re very delighted with our walls.
