Watling Academy is a new build 12-form entry secondary school, situated on the outskirts of Milton Keynes, within the Western Expansion Masterplan area.
Located on a greenfield site, the school is set within the heart of the new masterplan. It is also situated near the proposed local center and is the largest new build secondary school in Milton Keynes. The new school will accommodate 1,800 pupils and will form a key community and educational facility to the local area.
EH Smith worked with Glancy Nicholls Architects to identify a suitable facing brick for the scheme and could facilitate the projecting header detail.
The project was completed during Covid-19 lockdown and we worked hard to ensure that the site was kept supplied throughout in conjunction with the manufacturer, Ibstock.
Testimonial
“Choosing the brickwork was integral to the project. The external building material palette was selective as we wanted a contemporary aesthetic for the school. Brickwork was the primary material, incorporating various brick detailing, such as reveals, brick soffits and projecting brickwork.
We reviewed various bricks at the factory and visited built projects to ensure we were happy with the visual appearance. We chose the brick based on its warmth, which not only tied into the surrounding Western Expansion development, but also made the building feel bright, modern and inviting.”
